Mike BarrettMike has over 10 years experience in designing and building on-line systems for publishers. During that time, he has worked for FTSE 100 corporates, dot-com start-ups and mature, on-line publishing businesses on a wide range of projects encompassing branding, product development, search, system architecture and infrastructure.

Mike has extensive experience of product development in an on-line environment in both B2B and B2C environments. This experience covers site design and usability, content management, search, ad serving and user generated content/social networking platforms.

A pragmatic, disciplined approach to solving business problems is complemented by the ability to speak to both the technology and business teams, acting as translator/moderator.

Mike has experience of building and supporting products across multiple technologies in both European and international businesses to effect wide ranging change programs.

His areas of interest are in bringing together the best elements of design and technology to create innovative, reliable and most importantly, commercially viable on-line sites for media owners.

  • Web 2.0: Responsible for the team that designed and built the user generated content/social networking platform for CNET International.
  • Search/tagging: Experience in cutting edge search technology including clustering and automatic tagging of content.
  • Planning and management: Implementing program, project and time management disciplines into the business.
  • Integration: Taking best of breed applications and integrating them into the end user experience, for example commerce functionality, search engine technology, ad serving and content management.
  • Business process re-engineering: Analysis and change management of the product development processes and operational processes associate with commercial ad serving.

Experienced gained by:

  • Operations Director at major UK on-line publisher. Managing the creative, development and technology teams that built and support ZDNet, Silicon, Builder, Atlarge, CNET.co.uk and Gamespot.
  • European Technology Director for European on-line publisher responsible for the infrastructure and support for all systems across UK, France and Germany.
  • Chief Technology officer for publishing dot com start-up at the end of the bubble. Tasked with turning the business around and successful sale to a US publisher.
  • Group IT Manager for a FTSE 100 corporate responsible for web strategy across over 300 sites globally.

Mike is an active board member for the charitable event Byte Night where each year the technology industry sleeps out to raise money for NCH, the leading children’s charity.
